National Bike to School Day is a great way to get kids, families and community members excited about getting exercise, improving air quality and reducing traffic.

Earlier this month, students in more than 50 San Mateo County schools strapped on their helmets this morning and pedaled their way to school as part of National Bike to School Day.

More than 20,000 students either biked or walked to school on the morning of May 7, according to the San Mateo County Office of Education.

At most campuses, today’s effort began an hour before the start of school, with students, parents and community leaders biking and walking from various pre-planned meeting locations throughout San Mateo County, according to Daina Lujan, Safe Routes to School coordinator for the county Office of Education.

“National Bike to School Day is a great way to get kids, families and community members excited about getting exercise, improving air quality and reducing traffic,” Lujan said. “It is exciting to be part of this growing effort.”

Here are a few healthy reasons to take to the streets in the form of a walk or bike to school with your child:

It’s Fun: What a refreshing way to get some exercise before sitting down for the day to learn.

It’s Healthy: All bodies need some exercise. Biking to school or walking there will give you an opportunity to burn some calories and clear your head at the same time.

It’s Environmental: Time on foot or on your bike is time away from the gas your car dispels into the environment.

It’s good for the Community: Get out there and make some friends> encourage your classmates to walk with their parents or start a walk to school group where a parent alternates each day, lessening the load, creating a sort of Walk-pool.
