The state’s new standards will benefit students by having fewer, clearer, and deeper standards and require a greater use of analysis, critical thinking and real world skills.

Excerpt from group statement in support of Common Core

A statement supporting California’s Common Core State Standards has been signed by more than 300 California businesses, nonprofit and children’s groups. The groups collectively voiced their support of the Common Core standards in language arts and mathematics, stating that this new system for measuring growth will help students to become more college and career ready.

In the document, the group said, “The state’s new standards will benefit students by having fewer, clearer, and deeper standards and require a greater use of analysis, critical thinking and real world skills. They are also internationally benchmarked and line up with the skills that all students need to prepare for a global 21st century economy that’s increasingly competitive and always evolving.”

Recognizing that all groups in the statement have a vested interest in the success of the new assessment system, the group concluded with the state’s need to bring together all facets of education – from policymakers to teachers to community members – to come together and recognize the implementation process and maintain reasonable expectations.
